Take a Look at Life from A Teetotaler’s Point of View!
4 Observations from Teetotalers
There are many reasons why we choose not to drink and abstain from alcohol. Some of us may have has a troublesome relationship with alcohol in our past, and decided that it’s best to avoid it.
.
Former party animal turned Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. famously said that he gave up alcohol because it made him “break out in handcuffs”!
.
Then there are those of us who have never really drunk (alcohol) because we don’t like the idea of being intoxicated… There are so many reasons teetotalers avoid alcohol, and several reasons are:
- Some people simply don’t like the taste of alcoholic drinks. Easy!
- Yet others avoid alcohol because of tension headaches and hangovers.
- Others do so to avoid weight gain, as alcohol is pure sugar calories!
- Alcohol makes certain people very aggressive, some even become physically violent.
- Alcohol may increase stress levels, contrary to what many people think that it helps relieve tension!
.
But whether you’ve recently checked out of the ANA Treatment Centre or you’ve never touched a drop of alcohol in your life, being teetotal has its own challenges. Many regular drinkers and binge drinkers overlook these.
.
.
Below are 4 aspects of drinking that only teetotalers will understand…very well!
.
1. Awkward First Dates with Drinkers
.
That’s not really a problem at all… Until they reach the point when the person sitting opposite you thinks they’re getting more charming and funny.
.
In reality, they are actually gettin to the stage of slurring their words and staring blankly where they shouldn’t be. Hey, my eyes are up here, buddy!
.
2. Your Gym Goals seem Different to Everyone Else’s
You go to the gym to maintain your wellbeing and to pursue your health and fitness goals.
.
But you can’t help noticing that many of your friends and colleagues go to the gym to reverse the damage they’ve done.
.
When your friends tell you that they’d better hit the treadmill because of their overindulgence on lager and kebabs, you can be forgiven for wondering whether they’re taking one step forward and two steps back!
.
3. Your Colleagues may Wonder Why You Keep Politely Declining to Join Them for Post-Work Drinkies
It’d be great to enjoy a relaxing chat with your colleagues after a hard day’s work…
.
Unfortunately, whenever you let them talk you into joining them for post-work drinkies on a Friday afternoon, it’s never the evening of witty repartee you imagine it to be.
.
It all starts off civil enough… Until your head of department starts loudly pontificating about his lager-fuelled views on Brexit; the married guy from HR starts flirting with the woman from accounts and you’re stuck in the middle of this tipsy mess wishing you hadn’t bothered.
.
And then they wonder why you politely decline the following week!
.
4. You Wonder How Anyone Can Afford It
In today’s economy, it seems like all of us are working a little longer and a little harder for our wages. Yet, despite all your careful and meticulous household budgeting it can seem as though you barely break evening at the end of the month.
.
Then when you hear friends and colleagues discussing the truly heroic bar tabs they’ve run up over the weekend, you wonder how they could possibly afford it. Does everyone else have some sort of side hustle in armed robbery that you don’t know about?.
An often booze-fuelled world can be bemusing to teetotallers. But take it all in your stride and remember your reasons for refusing to partake. Then, it’s much easier to bear it all with a smile!
