The Real Meaning of Food Labels
Grocery shopping can sometimes be a bit confusing; especially if you’re trying to stick to a healthy diet. There are so many different food labels that it can be difficult to figure which are actually healthy and which are just marketing ploys. An interesting one is the word ‘Natural’ as it alone helps the food industry sell $40 billion worth of food alone but its definition is a little unclear.
Even though the FDA does recommend that natural foods should not contain artificial ingredients and preservatives, there are no official guidelines. What you should really be focussed on buying at the store are products labeled organic as these must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients.
Meat labels can often be very confusing at the store as there are so many different terms being used. Free-range can be a little puzzling as it does means chickens were allowed access to the outside but how long they were left outside is a little unclear.
Bread labels can also cause some confusion and it can be difficult to figure out which breads are healthy and which ones are not. For example, some people believe that multi-grain means the bread is healthy but all it indicates is that there’s more than one grain in the bread.
