Before you set foot in a rowing boat, it is crucial that you know how to swim and handle yourself in the water. An accident or mishap might happen while you were out rowing. You need to ensure that you can take care of yourself and others in an emergency situation.

There are various swimming techniques which you should master before you do any training for rowing. For example, stand-up paddle boarding will help you learn about balancing yourself on the water. You’d also need to learn about safety in the sea. This includes wearing a SUP PFD (personal flotation device) and not heading into risky bodies of water.

Once you’ve mastered the basics of swimming, you are ready to begin learning how to row.

Next, you’ll need to learn how to handle rowing. Fortunately, you can do this on dry land without risking yourself falling into the water with incorrect manoeuvres!

In many coastal areas and even inland locations where there are lakes. You’ll find a plethora of rowing clubs which you can join. Often, these are friendly and welcoming organisations. The majority are more than willing to let newcomers learn about the sport.

You’ll also have the benefit of being around like-minded people. It can be a good way to make new friends too!

Many rowing clubs offer free “taster sessions” with no obligation to commit to membership. They can also advise you on the right clothing and equipment you need to get started rowing with other club members.
