I grew up in a family full of Western-trained medical doctors, and when one is young, as I was then, you don’t give that much thought.
.
These people, cousins, uncles, etc, were just there in my life and when you’re ill, you just go to visit one or other family-member doctor: he examined you, gave you a few packets of coloured pills, you took them, and a few days later, you got better (sort of).
.
When I was a child, I was allergic to shellfish. Whenever I ate some, or even touched a bit with my mouth, my lips swelled up and resembled those of a large goldfish preparing to kiss you. It was very uncomfortable and very itchy and I cried and cried and cried. On top of that, I was teased mercilessly by my child cousins, of whom I had (still have) many. I was only 4 or 5 years old then. Needless to say, I was quite traumatised.
.
Along comes maternal Grand Dad, a Western-trained medical doctor, to see what the hoo-hah and commotion were all about. He said “Don’t cry – you can eat all the shellfish you wish and you won’t be ill. I shall give you an anti-dote every time.”
.
In his surgery in those days, he had those old-fashioned syringes, the size of which were much like those a vet would use for horses. He needed to use both hands to apply the medicine with these syringes. The very thought of these injections with those instruments of torture terrified and traumatised the little child in me even more!
.
So, my little 5-year-old child mind made a ‘wise’ decision (she didn’t know it was ‘wise’ – this is the adult-me writing today – the child-me then just used her survival instincts and wits): I simply stopped eating shell fish and avoided it like the plague. I didn’t want those gold fish lips. I didn’t want Grand Dad’s anti-dotes applied with those humongous syringes. Or the merciless teasing ~young children in a group can be very cruel. 3 PROBLEMS SOLVED! GONE! NEVER TO RETURN! 3 BROWNIE POINTS ~ given by me to me!
.
So, I had learned then, very young, that if you removed the cause of a problem, it (the problem) would go away and not come back. And removed the secondary problems at the same time. Huh? Very simply, cause and effect(s).
.
To make a long story short, and unbeknownst to me in those early years, my journey into healthy eating had started. It would be many years yet before I would actually formally train in holistic health.
.
My interest in food and nutrition grew during the years I lived in many different countries, through my restaurant years when my world was one of gourmet foods, through my love of fine-dining, through my own health ailments and those of my immediate family members, when I experimented with, and researched much on, diet, food and nutrition.
.
This website brings to you a taste of my experiences and the knowledge I acquired on this journey into the area of diet and nutrition. Warning: Still experimenting and learning!!!
